Alarm clock

I partly modelled this today. It's pretty easy I spose, but not for me. I am a beginner at Maya and any 3D program for that matter. Yay.

More ideas...

Seeins as we have just learnt about lighting (in tutes and class) and the full extent of what it can really do, it has made me re-think some ideas.

Modelling is hard, so I have created some ideas...er that didnt make sense...anyhoo, here goes:

1. the pencil case thing. I can model that with CV/EP curves, then use the Birail tool to create the object. It's kind of the same idea as the modelling of the human head, but a pencil case. The pencils seem easy enough. Gonna go test that after this post.

2. Potato and PEELER. It's still there. I just need to figure out how I can really pull it off.

3. My alarm clock. Awesome alarm clock (digital) form the 70's. Older than me.

Thats it for now. Cool.

Glass

I experimented with glass and stuff and being silly. Thats what its all about.

And for the sake of it...

More meaty goodness.

Paint-effects

Today Hages showed us the big world of PAINT EFFECTS.

I tested them out this afternoon and they seem fun. Easy, but fun. I can think of a few things I could use them for that could be very effective.

Anyway, to piss-fart around, I went into the tutorials and had a swing at the paint effects excercises. I made an underwater scene...HOT.

After that, I experimented for a short while and decided to make a meat-kettle. I put a reflective floor on the place so you can see the original kettle like THING. Awesome.

Reflections

Just been messing around with reflections/refractions. Pretty sweet stuff. Easyish too.

HERE!

Haha, that image is a tad big for this post. OH WELL.

Texture

WOW...Just SLIGHTLY explored the world of TEXTURES.... I feel as if I have only scraped the tip of the iceberg... and it's one hell of an iceberg at that.

Er, just tried something simple with a simple shape and grabbed a texture off the extra Maya CD that came with the program.... It's a "Chrome texture" but I didnt use it for that...I just made it look freaky.

This first image has no light.

These two images have a spot light on them.

YAY FOR SIMPLICITY AND EXPLORATION!

By the way I made these on my Mac and am uploading them on a pc...the colour difference is PHENOMONAL here...I hope you can see a shadow or two....Gah.

Also, can anyone help me with the rendering? There seems to be some weird triangle thing happening there...

Workin

I finally got onto StormFX last night and got Maya 6.5 working.

I will post some images from experiments I have done shortly.

BLAAARGH! KEYS!

Damn activation keys.

My copy of Maya 6.5 arrived in the post today with everything...SO I THOUGHT.

Geez.... OK, so you have to enter one activation key which is fair enough. Storm FX were nice enough to email it through to me. Nice persons they are. ANyhoo, I put that in and it worked and said everything was A-OK and I had to close the window and re-open Maya then it'd work. MY ASS. It failed and said it needed a DIFFERENT key totally unrelated to the last, and I had to request it from Maya....I got it and it works. Now apparently I need another one to run the program FROM Alias VIA email and I have no idea how this is working. DAMNIT.

I rang StormFX and they havent yet got back to me.

Ok....enough ranting. I have had some ideas for the three photo-real images. I don't want to do OBJECTS like Hages said everyone does, but it is so easy to fall into that trap. Instead I am making basic scenes with at least more than one object. AT LEAST.

My first idea is to have POSSIBLY a pencil case...but thats simple. You know, with pencils spilling out of it and everything. Close up shot, nice depth of field...the render would make it look better that what it generally would.

Another idea was a potato peeler resting on a potato IN A KITCHEN....yeah... background blurred photo thing happening there.... I don't want to make a kitchen...I don;t know why people do in Maya.

My other idea was my guitar bridge really close up...it's complicated looking and has red wood + chrome...different textures.

OK: So these are really basic ideas which will probably change once I know what I can do with Maya... I am very new to this, so I hope something sexy pops out in the end.

Cheers.

My Maya copy

Rang up StormFX yesterday to check that my order went through. It did... YAY.

I am currently doing the tutorials in Maya PLE and awaiting the full copy. It seems to be easy-ish so far, and I am enjoying it. Woo.

First post'D

Hello all viewing my BLOG... I am Tim. Also known as Crutchie, Crutch and other such profanities (my last name is Crutchett, so it isn't for other reasons that popped into your sick head...SICKO). I am the redhead who usually wears a GREEN JUMPER. Say hi to me, I am awesome.

Anyway, I am new to Maya so I downloaded Maya PLE (Pro Learning Edition). Watermarks shit me. I am waiting for my copy of Maya in the mail, then i'll be happy.

Anyway, as hages said, EXPERIMENT. That's what I have been doing so here are some images. Woo.

The idea behind what I did: I tried to create a really basic see-saw kind of thing to experiment with gravity, mass and a bit of lighting.

Wide shot
Click the image so see a larger version.

Ok, so I made a long plane for the see saw platform and used a "hinge constraint" so it's center of balance was dead in the middle of the plank. In other words, this makes it go up and down at each end...

Hinge constraint
That's the HINGE CONSTRAINT... pretty cool, huh?

Anyhoo, I made two cubes to act as weight thing's and my mission was to MAKE THE LIGHTER ONE FLY AWAY!

Here is the best of all of the images. I LOVE THE WATERMARK. [/sarcasm]
Render

The lighting is done with the simple and effective spotlight. I had to position it, and change some attributes...but it was fairly easy.

Hinge distance
You can see the spotlight in the top left in this image.

Anyway, thats about it. I am still a n00b, or beginner as some would say, at Maya, and hope to kick-ass at it (by kick-ass I mean 'operate') shortly. STAY TUNED and your instrument will sound better.

Cheers.
